These days I give lots of speeches. In Spanish. A language that is not my mother tongue. A language that I speak fluently, without hesitation. But my accent reveals: I come from somewhere else.

On the way to an event, I thought of a comment by Rachel DeWoskin. Rachel’s first book, Foreign Babes in Beijing, is a memoir about her experience as the “bad girl” on a Chinese reality TV show in the 90s, and how the show mirrored her real life in Beijing. It was one of the first books I read about China.

I met her at her book signing at The Bookworm in Beijing when she had just published Repeat After Me, a novel about a young English teacher in New York who falls in love with a Chinese dissident.

During the book signing, Rachel described a Chinese friend, who once said:

“He has IS a successful career and a failed personality.” (see note below)

She saw this as a purer form of the English language. A native speaker is unlikely to say “He has  is a successful career and a failed personality,” but is there really any better way to express this idea? Native speakers use cliches and lazy, context-based phrases, often without clarity.

The extra effort it takes to speak a non-native language can make the ideas resonate. And stick.

I notice this on airplanes in Chile, where I actually listen to the safety announcements in English because they don’t sound like the rushed, almost-automated announcements on American planes. I notice it when my German, Korean, Chinese, and Chilean clients talk to me in English. Of course a high level of fluency, decent pronunciation, and full understanding of the topic at hand are all helpful. But in any case, being a non-native speaker can add power to the message.

I am proud to give speeches in slightly stunted non-native Spanish. I am always learning new words (recently: vorágine, licitación, apalancamiento). I will continue to learn new words for the rest of my life.

At the end of my recent trip to Concepcion, our host Felipe Sepulveda, founder of Atrévete Hoy, made this video of me talking about my new business, to send an inspirational message to the aspiring entrepreneurs of the Región del Bio Bio and beyond. Listening to it makes me cringe a bit: Gah, I sound so American. Is that really how I talk?

But daring to open my mouth and speak imperfect Spanish and talk about imperfectly-formed ideas on stage has opened the door to so many opportunities. I encourage all of you to banish your doubts, grab a drink (it helps, I swear) and start talking!!

She commented, “what Anna actually said was ‘he IS a successful career and a failed personality,’ even wilder, I think.” This reminds me of the question I always get asked here in Chile, after explaining in Spanish that I am American and my work involves solar energy, China, and mining: “But I don’t understand, what are you?” 


 

Today is Veteran´s Day.

Today is the day to salute those who sacrifice so we can live in safety.

Today is the day to take practical steps to help soldiers who have finished their service re-integrate themselves into the civilian world.

My friend and fellow Start-Up Chile entrepreneur Ken Seville has built Guaranteed Interview, an innovative program to give veterans new civilian opportunities.

This feature leg to a great meeting with Chilean veterans, who confirmed that they faced similar challenges when they left the military. Underemployment among veterans is a global problem.

Recruit Veterans for Aptitude, Train for Skills

Philadelphia, PA – November 9, 2011 – There are nearly 300K unemployed post-9/11 veterans in America. Employers want to give the people who have sacrificed so much a hand-up in their transition back into civilian life, and it should be easy. Veterans are known for having great work ethic and a proven ability to adapt to new environments/roles, but military training and experience are not easily translated into civilian qualifications, resulting in a higher unemployment rate for veterans. This is a national dilemma that everyone from the President to local organizations is trying to solve with tax credits, hiring initiatives and resume/interview training. These can all contribute to the solution; however, none of these initiatives speak to the needs of employers that recruit for aptitude and train for skills.

Hiring for aptitude and training for skills is a strategy used by industry-leading companies like Southwest Airlines and ING Direct. These companies know it is much easier to train a new recruit in their business than it is to change an attitude that is incompatible with their organization. This conclusion is supported by research on personality fit and job success. Traditional recruitment techniques like resume- and interview-based hiring have a 14% chance of making a good hire, but including assessments for personality fit increases the chance to an astounding 68%.

How to Take a Career Break to Travel. By Alexis GrantI highly recommend Alexis Grant’s How to Take a Career Break to Travel. Her message is YES!! You can leave your job to travel the world AND move towards a more satisfying career!

Lexi worked as a reporter for the Houston Chronicle for three years before quitting to travel solo through Africa. She spent six months in Africa, and wrote a memoir about the experience, which her agent is preparing to pitch to publishers.  She has an excellent blog that shares positive, useful stories from her journey from employee to traveler to employee to side-hustler to solopreneur and she has been very supportive of my international entrepreneurship schemes.

Her guide is super-practical. She starts out with a pep talk about why you should take a Leap. Then she debunks the four big BUTS that keep people from pursuing their travel dreams (Money, House, Family, and Career.)

I especially like her advice to travel with a Mission. Her Mission was to freelance for newspapers and magazines. This gave her a concrete reason to meet interesting people, such as a Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal, who she profiled for her university’s alumni magazine, and a polygamous family in Cameroon. Traveling with a Mission gives purpose to your Big Trip, and gives you something concrete to talk about when you return to the “real world” and need to update your resume and all that fun stuff…

She also gives specific suggestions for using social media efficiently from the road. Lexi describes which applications work best from Internet cafes with questionable bandwidth (Skype, WordPress, and Hootsuite. I’d add Gmail, Google Docs, and Dropbox to her list.)

Lexi weaves in the stories about regular people who have taken Career Breaks, as well as honest details about their budgets, Missions, and experiences with re-entry culture shock.

Your career break could bring you to the gorgeous coast north of La Serena, Chile...

... or to Mongolia! Or to anywhere else you've dreamed of going. Oh, the possibilities!

She only devotes one page of the 94-page guide to working overseas (getting a job at a restaurant/vineyard/bookstore, teaching English, etc) which I was slightly disappointed to see. But I recognize that detailed advice on working overseas would go against her general message about how to take a break from your career that boosts your professional potential. Maybe this means I should write my own guide to launching your career overseas! Or point you towards another resource. Hmmm… stay tuned.
